Telecommunications in the Evansville Region

The telecommunications business in the Evansville area has been impacted significantly by deregulation. AT&T is no longer the only option for local access. Several other companies are providing dial-tone. In addition, SIGECOM is constructing a new fiber network throughout the area which will provide high speed voice/data service as well as cable TV service.

AT&T provides local access in most of the Evansville area. It provides digital switching (DSM-100s) throughout the area and can provide T1, DS-3, ISDN and Frame Relay services. There are three large fiber-optic SONETrings serving the Evansville area. AT&T customizes the service by creating smaller fiber rings to serve specific customers. The fiber rings are self-healing which allows data to pass in the opposite direction should a failure occur on one side of the ring. AT&T has installed a large amount of fiber optic cable throughout the region and can connect most business customers to support their communications requirements.
